Mouldy Garlic

More elephant garlic cloves arrived in the post this morning, to replace the ones that had gone mouldy last time. So I made a trip to the allotment this afternoon to stick them in the raised bed along with the garlics planted previously. Kasper and I arrived at the plot, surprised to find everything had not been washed away in several feet of water and mud after all the recent rain. Also surprised at the complete lack of weeds in the recently dug over areas.

But when I opened the bag of new garlic cloves, I found all but 2 were soft and mouldy! So most of them were thrown away. (I get the feeling something really doesn't want me to grow elephant garlic this year!) I should have more being delivered in January, so I'll just have to hope they'll survive the frosts if they're planted that late, and of course hope they don't arrive mouldy, like the other 2 lots.

The other garlics I planted earlier are doing really well. All of the Solent Wight cloves have healthy green shoots poking up through the soil, as do most of the Really Garlicky, Purple Wight, Germidour and Oswego White cloves. The 2 elephant garlics I'd already planted have shoots too. If I understand it correctly, that's good, as they'll all have had some growth before the frosts come. The only ones not showing any sign of life yet are the German Red cloves. But I guess there's still time yet.
